The Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano – An Overview

In the year 750 AD, an extraordinary event occurred in the Church of San Legonziano in Lanciano that would forever change the history of the Catholic Church.

A Basilian monk, who doubted the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, experienced a miraculous event during Holy Mass. After the words of consecration, bread and wine transformed before his eyes into living flesh and blood.

The blood congealed into five small spheres of varying sizes. This miracle was witnessed by all present and would be preserved throughout the centuries.

The first known written record of this event dates from 1574, although the oral tradition is much older. Detailed documentation was created in 1631.

Today, pilgrims can view these extraordinary relics in the Basilica of San Francesco in Lanciano – a living testimony to one of the greatest Eucharistic miracles of Christendom.
