The Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano
An extraordinary 8th-century Eucharistic miracle that continues to fascinate science to this day
The Story of the Miracle
In 750 AD, an extraordinary event occurred in Lanciano, Italy, that would forever change the history of the Catholic Church.
The Doubting Monk
A Basilian monk who doubted the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist experienced an extraordinary event during Holy Mass. After the words of consecration, the bread and wine transformed before his eyes into living flesh and blood.
The blood coagulated into five globules of different sizes. This miracle became witness for all present and would be preserved throughout the centuries.
The first known written record of this event dates from 1574, although oral tradition is much older. A detailed documentation was created in 1631.

Scientific Investigations
In 1970, Pope Paul VI commissioned scientific studies of the relics. The results were extraordinary.
Heart Muscle Tissue
The flesh was identified as striated muscle tissue of the myocardium (heart tissue) and endocardium
Human Blood AB
The blood was confirmed to be human, blood type AB, with normal protein distribution
No Preservation
Despite being over 1200 years old, no traces of preservatives were found
Fresh Properties
The blood maintains the same properties as fresh blood
The Research
Dr. Odoardo Linoli and Dr. Ruggero Bertelli conducted comprehensive investigations in 1970-1971. Their findings were corroborated by further studies, including those commissioned by the World Health Organization in 1973.
Dr. Bertelli repeated the studies in 1981 with the same results. The scientific commission stated in 1976 that science could not provide an explanation for these phenomena.
"Science cannot provide an explanation for these phenomena."
— Scientific Commission, 1976
