Lanciano Travel Guide
Lanciano is a town of about 35,000 inhabitants in the province of Chieti, roughly ten kilometres from the Adriatic. Here is how to plan your journey and stay.
Getting there
The town is easy to reach in several ways:
- By plane: the nearest airport is Pescara (Abruzzo Airport), about 45 kilometres away. Rome lies some 230 kilometres to the west.
- By car: A14 motorway Bologna–Bari, Lanciano exit, then about ten kilometres to the centre.
- By train and bus: regional trains and buses link Lanciano with Pescara. Direct coaches from Rome take around three hours.
Where to stay
The centre has small hotels, bed and breakfasts and holiday flats, many within walking distance of the shrine. Our own holiday flat, Casa Bella Gialla, is in the old town. If you prefer the sea, there is accommodation on the nearby coast at San Vito Chietino and Fossacesia.
Food and drink
Local specialities include arrosticini (small lamb skewers), pasta alla chitarra and, on the coast, fish served on the trabocchi. A Montepulciano d'Abruzzo goes well with them. The sweet speciality is bocconotti, small filled shortcrust pastries.
What to see in and around Lanciano
Besides the shrine, visit the cathedral of Madonna del Ponte, built on a Roman bridge, the old-town quarters and the Torri Montanare. On the coast lies the Costa dei Trabocchi with its wooden fishing platforms, inland the Majella National Park.
